Commissioners opt to add '525' plaques to Shindell Road signs after resident request

At the April 6 meeting, resident and landowner Bill Marquel pressed the board to change the Shindell Road name to "525 East," saying the numeric designation reflects the original survey and would eliminate mail and address confusion. "This is Bill Marquel. I own a 125 acres there... It's 525 East," he said.
Other local residents spoke against renaming the road, saying the Shindell name honored a long‑time local landowner and had been in use for decades. One long-time neighbor said he had lived on Shindell Road for 34 years and urged preserving the name out of local tradition.
Kyle Johnson, the county chief information officer, told commissioners a full name change would require extensive GIS and 9-1-1 updates and could create confusion for public safety dispatch. "Doing a major name change like this... it creates confusion for our public safety," Johnson said, recommending caution.
After discussion, a commissioner moved to add "525" sign plates above the existing Shindell Road signs as a compromise; the motion carried 2–1 on roll call. Staff will coordinate with Highway and GIS to order and install the plates and report back when complete.
