County approves jail change orders and redirects $9,424.90 in opioid funds to regional AV training center

The Tuscaloosa County Commission voted March 4 to approve two change orders for the county jail construction project and to reallocate surplus opioid funds to a regional training project.
Chief Alex Miles of the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Department presented two change orders for contractor CA Owens: an increase of $31,720 to install masonry embeds for wall-mounted benches, convert swinging doors to sliding doors and update hardware; and a $9,424.90 change for updates to telemedicine monitor enclosures. The commission approved both change orders unanimously.
Separately, the commission departed from the order of business to consider transferring surplus opioid funds. Commissioner Mark C. Nelson moved and Commissioner Stan Acker seconded a motion to transfer $9,424.90 in surplus opioid funds from the jail construction project to the AV Project Regional training center at the Synergic Center, a qualifying opioid-related project. The transfer was approved unanimously.
Meeting minutes show the funding source for the telemedicine enclosures change order was surplus opioid funds; the later transfer formalized that allocation to the AV Project Regional training center. The commission did not record opposition or abstentions.
