Board praises students, notes levy renewals and addresses student-led protests

The Lake Stevens School District Board of Directors used its Feb. 11 meeting to recognize student and staff achievements and to acknowledge recent civic engagement by students.
Principals from Lake Stevens Middle, North Lake Middle, Cavelero Mid High and Lake Stevens High introduced Students of the Month for January. Assistant Superintendent John Balmer presented APPLE Awards to staff including Katelyn Vincent, John Trivett, Heidi Whitman, Zackary Bowman and Melissa Kilgore, and SACo President Aashisri Bendalam presented a SACo Award to paraeducator Kameswari Regulagedda.
During her superintendent's update, Dr. Mary Templeton thanked the community for supporting renewal of the educational programs and operations levy and the educational technology levy, saying both measures were "currently passing well." She reiterated the district's commitment to serving a diverse student body and to its mission of preparing students for civic life and lifelong learning.
President David Iseminger opened public comment and community member Elizabeth Malan spoke regarding recent student-organized ICE protests. Director Mari Taylor later praised students, staff and administrators for modeling responsible civic engagement and commended district officials for emphasizing safety, order and respect for free speech in response to the protests.
Directors Paul Lund and Ryan Dickson also offered remarks thanking the community for levy support and emphasizing program evaluation and stewardship of taxpayer resources. With no further business, President Iseminger adjourned the meeting at 8:43 p.m.
