DDA supports downtown parklets; council told three restaurants applied and four parking spaces would be lost

Jess Meiangassner, director of the Milan Downtown Development Authority, told the council the DDA supports the installation of downtown parklets and has received parklet applications from three restaurants: Shawarma Twins, Peppers and the Owl. Meiangassner said the parklets would remove four on-street parking spaces but described them as a growth opportunity for new downtown businesses.
Meiangassner said the city’s parking subcommittee is developing a signage and outreach campaign to direct visitors to underused parking areas throughout Milan to offset the loss of those spaces. No formal ordinance change or vote was taken at the March 17 meeting; council acceptance or a permit decision was not recorded in the minutes.
Council comments during the meeting were supportive of finding ways to accommodate both new outdoor dining and visitor parking, and staff were asked to continue coordinating with the DDA and affected businesses.
