Committee on Appointments confirms six mayoral and commission nominations

The Committee on Appointments convened at 8:00 a.m. and unanimously approved a slate of confirmations for local boards and authorities. Chair called the question and commissioners voted to confirm Kimberly Williams to the Grand Rapids Police Civilian Appeal Board, Sarah Knoster to the South Town Corridor Improvement Authority, Rachel Wingo to the Uptown Corridor Improvement Authority, Ariel Ellis to the Bridal Streets Oversight Commission, Nate Rauberry to the Bridal Streets Oversight Commission, and Wayne Jernberg to the Grand Valley Regional Biosolids Authority.

During consideration of Ariel Ellis's appointment, Commissioner Clark raised potential conflicts tied to the appointee’s employer and requested that she complete the standard conflict disclosure. Clark said the commission ‘‘ask every member to put a conflict resolution together’’ and staff confirmed that declarations and the established recusal process would address any future conflicts. Commissioners expressed general support for the nominees’ experience; one commissioner noted Nate Rauberry’s service with the Grand Rapids Climate Coalition.

Clerk’s office staff reviewed the board and commission vacancy list and reported two resignations: Nathan Hirsch Henschel (Southtown) and Brooke Osterman (Grand Rapids Housing Commission). The clerk said most bodies retain quorum because members serve until their replacements are named. The committee set interviews for the First Ward vacancy (initial interviews April 17) and adjourned at 8:07 a.m.

The committee recorded the actions by voice vote and did not receive public testimony on these confirmations. The appointments take effect according to the city’s normal onboarding procedures.
