Summary
Lincoln Port, a project manager in UDOT Region 1, described his rise from trans tech to project manager and his roles on a traffic-signal installation in Ogden and a rock-fall mitigation project near Pine View Dam, crediting mentorship and the TEP program for his training.
Lincoln Port, a project manager with the Utah Department of Transportation’s Region 1, said he helped build a traffic signal in Ogden that eased persistent northbound backups and took part in rock-fall mitigation work near Pine View Dam.
Port told the meeting he began his career as a trans tech and later worked in the Blue Stakes division and permits before joining the utility division and, ultimately, moving into project management. “I’ve been a project manager for about 2 years now and, yeah, been loving it,” he said.
The project manager said his work focuses on pavement-preservation projects and other regional efforts. Describing the rock-fall mitigation, Port said crews installed nets along the rock base at Pine View Dam to prevent rocks from falling onto passing cars and that a helicopter was used during the work. “We did a rock fall mitigation up by Pine View Dam. I was part of that project, and we shrunk some nets up along that rock base to prevent rocks from falling on the cars,” he said.
On the traffic-signal project in Ogden, Port said the northbound leg used to back up heavily and that the new signal has improved flow. “Being part of building this signal and having this here to help the community has been been awesome,” he said.
Port credited UDOT mentors and the TEP training program for helping him acquire technical skills, noting the program taught him how to read plan sets that he now reviews regularly. He also said a shed foreman gave him an early opportunity to show what he could do and that he has held what he estimates are six or seven different titles within Region 1.
Port closed by describing his desire to mentor others entering the agency. “I would hope I could share something with somebody if they needed,” he said, identifying himself as Lincoln Port, project manager in Region 1.
The remarks provided an overview of workforce development at UDOT and local transportation projects affecting drivers in the Ogden area. No votes or formal actions were recorded during the segment.
