Miami authorizes interlocal agreement with Ottawa County to assist with demolitions

The Miami City Council authorized an interlocal agreement with Ottawa County at its Nov. 18 meeting to secure limited county assistance in demolishing dilapidated structures that pose public-safety hazards.
A city staff speaker explained the arrangement, saying Ottawa County representatives (Travis and Mike Furnas) helped negotiate an agreement under which the county will provide limited demolition assistance as funds are available. The staff speaker told the council that the county will likely do demolitions “two or three at a time” and that each instance of county assistance can save the city several thousand dollars.
Councilmembers asked whether the city could select which properties were prioritized; staff said the city could choose the worst structures. After brief discussion, a councilmember moved to approve the agreement and the motion carried.
Council did not adopt separate funding commitments at the meeting; the agreement is structured so county assistance occurs only when county funds are available. Staff said the agreement is intended to supplement city demolition efforts and reduce per-demolition costs when possible.
Next steps: staff will finalize the interlocal agreement paperwork and coordinate scheduling with Ottawa County when demolition funds and priorities align.
