The Maplewood City Council approved an off-sale intoxicating liquor license for Booze Brothers LLC doing business as Express Liquors at 1900 County Road D East, Suite 101 during its Jan. 12 meeting.
City licensing staff told the council that background investigations of the co-owners turned up no reason to prohibit issuance. Lieutenant Hemke met with one co-owner and manager, Gudkir Singh, to review measures intended to prevent underage sales and address retail-security concerns. The staff presentation noted the license remains conditional on meeting all building, fire and state inspection requirements before issuance.
Gudkir Singh told the council he met with Lieutenant Hemke and agreed to follow recommended procedures: "We gotta make sure we ID everyone ... like, try to ensure, like, we don't hire a minor as a worker there," Singh said.
Councilmember Lee moved the motion to approve the license; Councilmember Cave seconded. The motion carried by voice vote.
The approval authorizes Express Liquors to continue the licensing process; staff noted the state inspection and building/fire compliance still must be completed before the city issues the license.
