Staff updates: solar grant application, climate mitigation plan timeline and Century Ponds progress
Summary
City staff updated the commission on a Wakefield Park solar grant application that could cover most project costs, the consultant draft of a Maplewood climate mitigation plan due in January, and that the Century Ponds development variances have been approved and will require implementation work.
City staff briefed the Environmental and Natural Resources Commission on several administrative items during the meeting.
Staff said the City Council recently authorized applying for a third round of a solar on‑public‑buildings grant for a planned installation on the Wakefield Park Community Building; if awarded the grant would cover all but about $7,000 of the project cost. Staff said a contractor is in place and work would begin in the spring regardless of grant outcome.
Staff also reported that consultants will deliver a draft Maplewood climate mitigation plan by January, with the plan to return to the commission in February for review of goals and action items. City leadership requested the plan be tailored to Maplewood prior to release.
Separately, staff updated commissioners that the Century Ponds development (which required multiple wetland buffer variances) was approved by City Council and now moves into implementation tasks including final plat approval and monitoring of mitigation measures.
Staff noted a planned board/commission appreciation event on February 5 and that the commission is considering canceling the December meeting and resuming in January, when chair and vice chair elections will occur.
