Committee interviews two nominees for Brownfield Community Advisory Council

The Detroit City Council Internal Operations Standing Committee interviewed two nominees for the Brownfield Community Advisory Council on Sept. 10, 2025.
David Sheldon Bonner, who introduced himself as an adjunct professor in business and finance, said his 20-plus years in municipal finance and work on municipal bond deals prepared him to weigh in on the financing of brownfield redevelopment. “Detroit’s DVRA has been phenomenal,” Bonner said, citing examples including a bridal fair, a restaurant and the Detroit Food Co‑op as successful uses of DVRA resources. He told the panel he would bring public‑finance expertise to decisions about whether proposed deals are lucrative for the city.
Josh Mack described a long career linking education, urban planning and housing work. He told the committee he has a master’s degree in community urban development and experience running multiple community sites and housing projects, including HUD rehabilitation programs. “That experience would help me in serving the Brownfield Redevelopment Advisory Committee,” Mack said, noting past roles overseeing school‑related housing projects.
Both nominees received praise from members. Councilmember Angela Whitfield Callaway said Bonner was an “excellent candidate” and offered support for his service. The chair said the body expected to make a decision in about two weeks, after one remaining interview.
The interviews were held in public session. No formal votes were taken during the interviews; committee members signaled interest in advancing the nominees for final consideration at a future meeting.
