Council urges health testing after demolition fill fails environmental standards

Member Amber Waters reported a memo from the Construction & Demolition Department about unapproved material used to fill a demolition site at 3751 Northwestern. The memo said the sampled material did not meet contractual environmental quality standards and "exceeded the standard for direct contact." Waters moved to call on the health department to test children who live near the property and to follow up with written memorandum; the motion carried without objection.
"Accordingly, the material will be removed and replaced as soon as possible," Waters read from the memo and said she would follow up with a written request to the health department to assess possible exposure among nearby children.
The council recorded the motion and asked that the health department provide testing and remediation notices to residents; members indicated staff would follow up in writing.
