Maplewood council accepts $24,000 donation and grant to restore second police K‑9

Maplewood — The Maplewood City Council accepted Feb. 23 a package of donations and grants totaling $24,000 to fund a new police canine and handler training.
Chief Bearden told the council the department has maintained K‑9 units since 1977 and that staff applied for a $7,500 grant from the United States Police Canine Association and an American Kennel Club program; the department also has a long partnership with McDonough Canine Training, which staff said agreed to contribute about $16,500. "If approved, a new handler and canine will attend school this March through June," Chief Bearden said.
Staff said the combined funds will cover the cost of the canine and training, allowing the department to restore a second canine team sooner than budgeted. Council moved to accept the donation (moved by Ginnaman, seconded by Cave) and the mayor announced the motion carried.
The donation will enable the department to maintain two K‑9 teams; staff did not report any ongoing budget obligations tied to the donation beyond the one‑time training and procurement costs.
