Detroit committee approves administrative measures, asks law staff to prepare confirmation‑hearing language

At its meeting the Internal Operations committee moved and approved several administrative items, including motions to receive and file ethics and disclosure reports, a procedural extension of an interim suspension and the reauthorization of two council task forces.

The law department advised the committee the interim suspension extension for Gayanga Company LLC and Brian McKinney was being sought because the related investigation is ongoing and that, under the cited authority, the initial suspension may be extended for up to three additional 30‑day periods. "The initial suspension can be extended for 3 additional 30‑day period[s]," Graham Anderson of the law department said. Committee members requested the inspector general appear at a future meeting to speak to the investigation.

The committee approved Member Scott Benson’s resolution to reestablish the Detroit Wealth Generation Task Force for another four years and separately voted to continue the Detroit City Council Green Task Force. Benson also sought drafting of a resolution and memo asking the law department to prepare confirmation‑hearing language consistent with the charter so council could act on mayoral appointments (the clerk and law staff agreed to draft proposed language).

Members also discussed a second request for campaign contributions and expenditures disclosures; Crystal Phillips of the Board of Ethics said a locally required disclosure form exists in addition to state filings and the committee moved to receive and file that request.
