The board moved forward with a resolution to name the newly renovated JP Stevens auditorium the Andrew DeNicola Arts Auditorium in recognition of his decades of service to district music programs.
Members of the public, former students and colleagues recounted DeNicola's decades of work in the district. "Andy did a lot of great things that he didn't have to do," said longtime alumnus Nick Romanitz, describing DeNicola's devotion to students. Teacher and former student Amy Bugaloo called DeNicola "my mentor" and said she returned to Edison to teach because of his influence.
Board President Xi said a formal resolution will appear on the agenda and that the board intends to honor DeNicola at a forthcoming meeting. The auditorium naming was described as a way to recognize contributions to student arts programs and to showcase the renovated performance space for future school concerts and events.
What happens next: The board will finalize and read a resolution at a future meeting, and the district plans a public recognition when the auditorium construction is complete.
