The Neighborhood Community Service Study Committee voted to forward a resolution authorizing the General Services Department to submit a $1,040,000 grant application to United Way for Southern Southeastern Michigan for the 2026 Summer Discovery program.
Assistant Director Alex Weatherup told the committee the program would serve about 520 students ages 6 to 12 and would cover the full summer program at approximately $450 per pupil. "This would serve about 520 students, ages 6 to 12, and it would cover the cost of the entire summer program, which is usually about 450 per pupil," Weatherup said.
Council members asked how many students would be served and whether there was a city match; GSD said there is no city match requirement and that the total project cost equals the amount sought. The committee moved the resolution to formal session with recommendations for approval.
The committee did not take a final vote on the resolution at this meeting; the item was forwarded for formal session consideration.
