Residents press council on retirees, water-main breaks and BZA transcript charges during public comment

He also requested a physical copy of the Plant Moran report and asked that the retiree task force be re-established. "I think the city of Detroit should be renegotiate some aspects of it," he said.
Caller Jadonta Smith urged removal or greater scrutiny of several reappointments and raised concerns about water service, citing "51 water main breaks" across the city and saying contractors and residents have many complaints.
Betty A. Varner, president of the DeSoto Ellsworth Black Association, provided community-health resources and contact information for the Nolan Family Health Center and Detroit Community Health Connection, noting sliding-fee services, mental-health support and pharmacy services available to uninsured residents.
Brother Cunningham urged residents and listeners to assist people waiting at bus stops during cold weather by donating hand warmers and bus tickets and praised council staff who help homeless constituents.
A caller identifying as "You Matter" pressed the committee on a process question: citing Detroit City Code 50-2-66 and Board of Zoning Appeals procedure 3.05, the caller said appellants previously received no-cost transcripts filed by the law department but now are being charged (the caller cited figures they said approached $707 per page and a $4,700 total in one case), and urged the chair to look into whether the law department or BZA rules are limiting access to appeals.
The chair closed public comment after callers finished and thanked participants; several members later referenced public comments during the audit discussion and follow-up actions.
