Council committee honors volunteer Michael Cunningham for winter donations

The Neighborhood & Community Service Standards Committee presented volunteer Michael Cunningham with a cache of cold‑weather supplies on Jan. 29 and praised his ongoing outreach to transit riders and people who are unsheltered.

Chair (opening the presentation) read a list of items the committee approved to present to Cunningham, including 320 fruit‑flavored lip balms, 100 pairs of large socks, 100 pairs of extra‑large socks, 150 large hand warmers, 100 beanie hats with matching scarves and 60 pairs of bright touchscreen‑capable gloves. "It is my honor and privilege to present this to Mister Michael Cunningham," the chair said when announcing the donation.

Cunningham, who distributes supplies on buses and at stops, told the committee, "The people are very, very appreciative and I was running low on these hand warmers," and described the demand he sees on cold days: people who are semi‑housed or waiting long periods for transit grabbing hand warmers and hats. Members said the donations help break down barriers between volunteers and residents and provide immediate physical relief.

Council President James Tate and other members praised Cunningham’s long service. Tate said the council had shared opportunities to ride and speak with Cunningham and thanked him for serving District 1 and the broader city. Council member Scott Benson and others recounted recent bus rides with Cunningham and urged continued community support and donations.

The presentation concluded with a group photograph and brief remarks by volunteers who plan a Saturday outreach to assemble and hand out lunches and supplies. The committee then moved on to the scheduled agenda items.

The presentation and public thank‑you were limited to recognition and community outreach; no formal policy or funding vote took place at the committee meeting.
