Before beginning legislative business the Senate took time to recognize visiting education and local government leaders and to pay tribute to a recently deceased community figure.
A lawmaker recognized the state's 12 community and technical colleges by name and invited campus representatives to stand for acknowledgement. Later, Senator Miller asked the chamber to welcome parish presidents from across Louisiana who had been meeting the governor and legislators that day.
The chamber also heard extended remarks honoring Dr. Joe Green, referred to in the floor tribute as the "Bayou Bishop." A lawmaker outlined Dr. Green’s biography — born in Pineville on May 20, 1940; service in the 82nd Airborne; degrees from Southern University and other institutions; long pastoral service and work founding community programs — and asked the Senate for a moment of silence for his passing.
These recognitions were offered as part of routine opening remarks and ceremonial business prior to consideration of bill introductions and committee reports.
