A public commenter at the Detroit Neighborhoods Committee accused Conrad Mallett of offering him a $35,000 job and said the offer amounted to a bribe intended to silence his community work.
"I was told in my spirit to play the tape that I have with Conrad Mallet offering me a job for $35,000 with my 2 children," said Jadonte Smith during the meeting's public comment period. Smith also alleged that some council members have accepted money from the Maroon family and Crown Enterprises, and said that Mayor Sheffield had taken $25,000. "Conrad Mallett does not deserve to be on the board of police commissioner. He needs to be removed," Smith said.
Smith told the committee he intends to pursue professional discipline: "I'm coming for his bar license," he said. The commenter linked the allegation to an upcoming reappointment vote and said he would hold council members accountable for any affirmative votes.
No representative for Conrad Mallett or any city official provided a response during the meeting. The committee did not take formal action on the allegation at the session; council business moved on to the scheduled public-comment callers and then to new business.
This report summarizes the allegation as presented in public comment. The claim was not substantiated or addressed with evidence during the committee meeting; the committee record and any forthcoming staff or ethics reviews should be consulted for updates or official responses.
