Historic Designation Advisory Board to share Black History Month posts documenting Detroit stories

The Historic Designation Advisory Board told the Committee of the Whole it will publish social-media posts throughout Black History Month highlighting lesser-known local stories and asking council members and residents for suggestions.
Ian Tomasik, a historic planner who co-manages HDAB’s social pages, said the posts aim to surface ‘‘lost narratives’’ embedded in Detroit’s built environment. He said the board already shared a clipping honoring Paul Robeson and material referencing local African American histories and that staff welcome topic requests from council members.
Another HDAB staffer stressed the goal of unearthing overlooked local figures and features of the built environment that connect to African American history. Council members named examples they would like to see included — from speeches delivered in Detroit to local activists — and HDAB offered staff contact information for follow-up. The committee received and filed the report.
