Public commenters urge more outreach, question home‑repair eligibility, and raise artifact custody concerns

The council opened an abbreviated public comment period (one minute per caller) and several callers raised local issues tied to city services and the museum presentation.

Betty A. Varner, president of the DeSoto Ellsworth Black Association, said she and others had been on a list for walk‑in showers for seniors and people with disabilities; she said program changes and reallocation of funds left some who already had work done or who had expected services now ineligible and asked the council to resolve notification and eligibility problems.

Other callers raised transit access concerns (a senior unable to bring a grocery cart into a store restroom while waiting for a bus) and suggested the council clarify transit center restroom policies. William M. Davis said Detroit’s port authority could do more to generate revenue and criticized the museum presentation for lacking a slideshow and for missed opportunities in promotion.

Angela Whitfield Callaway and callers urged the society and the council to do more to promote museum attractions and to use artifacts in place‑based displays throughout the city to attract visitors (for example, placing vehicles or reproductions in public parks or high‑visibility corridors). A caller also raised a question about custody and insurance for a Christopher Columbus bus stored in Livonia and asked the council to investigate who authorized the transfer and whether the artifact is insured.

The chair offered members time to respond to specific points after the public comment period. The council closed the short public‑comment block and recessed for committee scheduling and executive‑session follow‑ups.
