Council advances bus-shelter and bench program and authorizes $16M BUILD grant application for Verner corridor
Summary
DDOT and BPW described a multi-part transit and streets package: a shelter contract with a 110-site shortlist needing Title VI/SHPO sign-offs, up to 200 bench installations (about 25 already placed), and a $16 million BUILD grant application for the West Verner streetscape that would move bike lanes into alleys and widen sidewalks.

City transportation directors described several related projects and the committee moved those items forward.
DDOT Director Robert Kramer said the shelter contract includes a short list of roughly 110 potential shelter locations but cannot proceed to ordering until the department completes required Title VI and SHPO reviews and secures other approvals; the administration will return to the council with a site list before ordering. Kramer also said the contract authorizes installation of up to 200 benches (DDOT has already placed about 25) and that bench siting will continue through permit and jurisdictional reviews.
BPW Director Ron Brunner introduced a proposed $16 million BUILD (U.S. DOT) grant application to construct a streetscape on West Verner (Woodmere to Central). Brunner said community outreach began in 2024; feedback from businesses informed a plan to move unprotected bike lanes from the street into alleys as part of the corridor work to widen sidewalks and increase on-street parking in the business district.
OCP and DPW also described a supply-schedule amendment adding prequalified engineering and planning firms (DLZ, OHM Advisors, PEA Group and HDR Michigan) to a multi-year roster covering task orders up to an overall $81.3 million authorization; the committee approved the amendment and the related items and sent them to formal with recommendation to approve.
