Campbell said the project will build fiber to unserved and underserved areas with an open‑access model allowing multiple providers to use the same infrastructure. She said the award would substantially advance regional broadband access and could lower prices—potentially producing high‑speed plans around $50 per month and more affordable lower‑tier options—although final service pricing and timelines depend on federal approvals and additional funding.
Construction is anticipated to begin as early as the coming fall if federal approvals are finalized. Campbell said additional funding will still be sought to complete the full buildout but that the awarded funds will cover substantial progress across participating counties.
The commissioners noted the potential economic and educational benefits of improved broadband access for residents and businesses.
