Finance committee forwards Byrne JAG application and four appropriations to full council

The finance committee of the Newark City Council voted unanimously April 6 to forward a grant application and four spending items to the full council.
The panel approved a resolution authorizing and directing the mayor to prepare and submit applications to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Assistance for fiscal-year 2025 Edward Byrne Justice Assistance Grant funding, a shared application with the Virginia County Sheriff's Office. Chair (S1) recorded the motion by Barker with a second by Chu; the committee voted 5-0 to send the resolution on to full council.
Melissa Saville, who identified herself as assistant director (S2), asked the committee to approve a $100,000 appropriation to cover additional grant-funded program needs that have exceeded initial estimates this spring. The motion by Barker, second by Cost, passed 5-0.
Separately, the committee agreed to appropriate $10,000 in new donations designated for the HomeCourt program; a presenter (S4) said both donations are ready to be put to use. That motion (by Barker, second by Chiu) was approved 5-0.
Finance staff (S5) reported first-quarter adult-use cannabis-tax collections of $135,625.19 and requested those funds be moved into the city's rainy day fund as previously discussed. A motion by Barker, second by Chute, passed unanimously.
All items were approved by roll call for a 5-0 vote and will appear on the next full Newark City Council agenda for final action.
