Marion council approves three new patrol officers; hires set to start in September

The City of Marion Council voted unanimously to hire three new patrol officers, approving start dates of Sept. 10–12, 2024.
Councilor Commissioner Barwick moved to approve the merit-board recommendations to hire Dylan Carico (start date Sept. 10), Megan Gooch (start date Sept. 11) and Madison Arnold (start date Sept. 12); each motion was seconded and adopted by roll call. Mayor Absher presided over the meeting.
Chief (speaker 7) introduced each candidate. Introducing the first hire, the chief said, “Dylan is a… resident of Marion, graduate of Marion High School,” and noted his prior service with the Saint Robert Police Department. Carico told the council he had spent “the last 4 years on the road for Saint Robert Police Department” and that he was “finally decided it was time to come home and give back to the community.”
On Megan Gooch’s hire the chief said she was recently a Williamson County deputy and was already familiar with the department’s report-writing and CAD systems, which should allow her to “step right in and get rolling really quick.” Gooch, who the chief introduced to the council, said she was “looking forward to serving the city of Marion and their citizens.”
On Madison Arnold, the chief noted she has not yet attended an academy and will attend the Illinois State Police Academy at the end of the month; Arnold told the council, “I’m a nurse and a mortician,” and thanked the council for the opportunity. The council welcomed each of the new hires and paused briefly to allow families to depart for dinner.
All three motions were recorded as passed by roll call. The minutes list each candidate’s start date and note that Arnold will attend academy training at the end of the month.
