Two members of the public addressed the council during the public comment period at the March 5 Granite Falls City Council meeting.
James Weeks, vice-commander and representative of the American Legion, told the council the Legion Hall has been voted to be placed up for sale and discussed concerns related to that status. The minutes record his remarks but do not include further details about the proposed sale or next steps.
Sondra Novak, of 503 N. Indiana Ave., described people smoking on E. Alpine Street in areas where children walk and urged the council to consider options to address the situation. In response during council comments, Councilmember Glenn asked staff to review the municipal smoking code and asked that the topic be added to a future agenda; Mayor Matthew Hartman asked staff to explore whether multi-family housing could be required to provide designated smoking areas.
The minutes do not record a council decision on either matter; City Manager Brent Kirk later noted a draft purchase agreement concerning the Legion Hall is under consideration, and staff will follow up as appropriate.
