Salinas commission asks council to reconsider District 5 rec center placement and parking after resident objections

The Salinas Library and Community Services Commission voted to recommend that the City Council reconsider the placement and parking for the proposed District 5 recreation center (CIP 9342) at Northgate Neighborhood Park, after residents and commissioners questioned neighborhood outreach, traffic safety and whether the $8.1 million allocation could deliver an adequate facility.

The recommendation, made March 11, follows a staff presentation by Recreation Parks Superintendent Anna Ambreese and a feasibility study presentation by Jason Hall of ABA Studios showing two site options and a phased approach. Staff said outreach reached roughly 627 people in an initial round and about 1,300 in a later round, producing nearly 2,000 input points.
