Committee forwards $70,000 in CDBG public-service grants to full council

The Kankakee City Community Development Committee voted April 6 to forward recommendations for $70,000 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) public-service awards to the full City Council.
Maya Pedigu, who worked with the community advisory board, told the committee four applicants were eligible and that, unlike last year, the committee could fully fund each application. "We were able to fully fund each of the applications," Pedigu said. The recommended awards support: Cornerstone Services (resource closet for women and children); Harbor House (homeless-prevention financial assistance); Catholic Charities (transitional and rapid rehousing); and a medical clinic for expanded supplies, lab services and outreach.
According to presentation materials, the $70,000 is the regular annual allocation for CDBG public services in this cycle. The CAB recommended an even split of the remaining $1,900 between Cornerstone Services and the medical clinic to boost selected awards beyond their original requests.
A motion to recommend the funding package to full council passed on a roll call vote; committee members recorded a unanimous recommendation to the full City Council and agreed to place the item on the council agenda in April. The committee did not vote to finalize grant contracts; final award and contracting will occur at city council following the committee's recommendation.
The committee also noted a public hearing on the items had been recorded and posted on the city website for those who want more detail on award amounts and program descriptions.
Next steps: the committee recommended the package to the full City Council for final approval and expects the council to consider it at the agenda date announced by staff.
