Board reviews LCAP results and school-specific plans as county offers feedback

The Sequoia Union High School District Board of Trustees reviewed the district Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) and site plans at its June 4 meeting, hearing presentations on outcomes and targeted actions to address gaps for specific student groups.
Assistant Superintendent Bonnie Hanson summarized districtwide LCAP results, reporting increased survey participation this year and improvements on several local indicators: suspension rates for African American and Pacific Islander students moved out of the “red” category and chronic absenteeism for English learners dropped. Hanson cautioned that a single year’s data does not prove cause and effect but said the district saw positive movement across multiple measures.
At the school level, East Palo Alto Academy’s presenter described key needs identified during engagement: strengthened teacher collaboration and professional development (particularly in math), expanded in‑school tutoring and study‑skills classes during the school day, more EL strategies and a switch to EL Achieve for ELD curriculum, and increased restorative‑justice staffing via Peninsula Conflict Resolution Center. The presenter said the school will increase department supply funds, expand summer school offerings, and reintroduce a service‑leadership class after student demand.
Trustees and staff discussed next steps: incorporating final feedback (including county suggestions) into the LCAP, returning the plan for final approval, and tracking dashboard results in the coming year. The district reiterated that public comment had been invited and that the LCAP was posted online in English and Spanish with an opportunity for community feedback; no public comments were made at the hearing.
The board will consider the LCAP for adoption at a future meeting after staff incorporate public and county feedback and confirm the measurement details required by the state.
