Commissioner Jason Frost moved to table the radio upgrade until the board had a revised written quote and could discuss funding options at the next work session; the motion passed unanimously. Weaver told the board he would seek additional quotes, including from Motorola, and explore grant funding and possible cooperation with neighboring Stewart County on repeaters.
Weaver said the sheriff expressed a preference for a higher-end, more expensive radio option. The minutes report the sheriff “wants the high dollar radio at the $70,000.00” and had “no interest in anything else.” Commissioners and staff said they support improving communications for public safety but voiced concern about affordability, and they discussed keeping existing repeaters and antennas as a backup.
Commissioner Frost urged the board to prioritize first responders while also being careful about county spending; he encouraged staff to search for grants and intergovernmental solutions that could lower the county cost. No purchase motion was made at the Jan. 6 meeting; the item was tabled pending a revised quote and a called meeting at the next work session.
Next steps: staff will obtain written revised quotes, request a Motorola bid for comparison and pursue public-safety grant opportunities and regional repeater cooperation, then return with cost estimates at a future work session.
