Local scouting group asks district to serve as charter organization

Toby Tibbetts, committee chair for Troop 640 in the Great Southwest Council, asked the Moriarty‑Edgewood School District board on Feb. 18 to consider the district as a charter organization for his Scouting America troop and pack.
Tibbetts said the unit serves the East Mountains area and currently has about 35 scouts (between the troop and pack), 37 historical Eagle Scouts and several youth at advanced ranks. He described the request as a partnership in which the district would serve as the charter organization, provide a liaison and allow the unit to use district facilities as a recruiting and meeting venue.
"We're the only unit in the East Mountains... we're the only combined girl‑boy troop in the East Mountains," Tibbetts told the board, describing program activities and community participation ranging from parades to Memorial Day events.
Board members asked for a more detailed written proposal; the superintendent said staff would invite Tibbetts to submit a fuller plan and would add an item to a future board agenda to consider the charter request and any operational details required for facility use.
Where it stands: the board did not vote on the request at the Feb. 18 meeting; trustees directed district staff to follow up and schedule a future agenda item for further consideration.
