Holly Area Schools reports gains on state assessments, outlines outreach and advisory initiatives

Superintendent Roper and the Secondary Leadership Team told the Board on Oct. 20 that Holly Area Schools showed continued academic growth on spring 2025 assessments. District Data Coordinator Michael Beattie and principals Monica Turner and Melissa Wachowski presented M‑STEP, PSAT and SAT results showing Holly students outperform Genesee County averages in most tested areas and 11th‑grade scores above state averages in math, English language arts and science.
The leadership team described school-level initiatives intended to build on those results. Holly Middle School will emphasize goal-setting, attendance and recognition programs to boost engagement. Holly High School plans to strengthen advisory periods and expand career-exploration activities, while continuing the LEAD program focused on leadership, responsibility and respect.
Executive Director Szczechowicz described expanded parent outreach tied to the strategic plan, including a FAFSA workshop on Oct. 23, a Preparing Our Kids workshop on Oct. 30 and a Raising Good Humans parenting session on Nov. 3; each event will include dinner and family engagement resources. The district also highlighted College and Career Week activities, a Post‑Secondary Fair with more than 80 colleges and organizations, and career events at elementary schools.
Superintendent Roper said the results reflect “meaningful progress” given local funding challenges and reiterated the district’s focus on alignment with state standards and student goal-setting. Board members asked questions about implementation and applauded participation in career and college events.
The Board took no formal vote on the assessment presentation; the materials and discussion were provided as part of the district’s strategic plan update.
