Committee forwards plan to standardize display of past mayors and commissioners’ photos to Legislative Committee

The Sumner County General Operations Committee voted to refer a proposal to the Legislative Committee asking staff to develop a formal policy for how past county mayors and commissioners’ photos are displayed in county buildings.

A committee member advocating the change said the current displays are “random” and recommended a floor-by-floor chronology so “every mayor or county executive should have their place in there.” The mover asked Legislative to create a standard policy rather than having the General Operations Committee finalize placement and format at this meeting.

Members discussed practicalities and cost. One committee member estimated framing and matting costs as “negligible, a couple few hundred dollars” and said the frames used in the commission chamber could serve as a standard. Committee members also raised the need to research archival records and to identify names and years for earlier officeholders where photos are missing.

An amendment added direction for staff to move all existing commission and mayoral photos to the rotunda (the public-facing round area) and to add name placards for anyone missing a photo; the committee agreed the Legislative Committee could refine or amend specifics.

Speaker 3 moved to recommend that Legislative draft the policy; Speaker 5 seconded. The Chair called for a voice vote and the motion carried by voice.
