Council and staff reviewed a draft memorandum of understanding with the school district to temporarily relocate the school’s fitness equipment into the town’s old firehouse for up to three years.
Chelsea, the staff lead on the item, said the draft had been redlined by county counsel and she and the mayor had removed language that would give the school control over fee revenue; the town’s recommendation is that the town administer and control fees collected from the facility. Council members raised operational concerns: who would perform maintenance and repairs on equipment that in places dates to the early 2000s, how supervision would be handled (staff, contractors, or school supervision for student groups), whether the town would need HVAC, roof and restroom upgrades, and what security measures (keyless entry, cameras) would be required.
Chelsea and other staff said they could further negotiate terms, ask the school to clarify responsibilities, and get input from the town’s risk/loss‑prevention contact and an insurance review. Council agreed not to rush a decision and asked staff to return with clarified insurance, access, supervision and maintenance language for further consideration next month.
