At the March 13 Public Safety Commission meeting, code enforcement and animal control presented February activity and highlighted several enforcement successes.
The city’s code‑enforcement representative said staff received 110 service requests in February, issued 94 notices of violation and 33 citations that totaled $35,600. The officer highlighted two long‑running cases that were brought into compliance after sale to new owners or active enforcement: a nuisance property on Ironwood with new ground cover and building improvements, and a long‑abandoned residence that underwent plumbing, electrical and roofing repairs and landscaping. A vacant lot on La Mesa that had been used for illegal dumping was also brought into compliance with signage and property‑owner outreach.
The officer described enforcement tools including citations, notifications to registered owners and use of warrants to remove chronic abandoned vehicles; if vehicles are towed under the AVA program they are not returned to owners, the officer said. The officer asked residents to report concerns via the city’s website so admin staff can route cases to the appropriate inspector.
The animal‑control representative reported 51 intakes in February: 15 animals returned to owners, 8 sent to rescue, 3 adoptions, one animal sent to CVAC for bite quarantine, 14 sent to a veterinarian and 21 DOAs. The representative added that the Animal Action League conducted 31 spay/neuter surgeries at a recent event in the city parking lot.
Commissioners asked whether standing dead trees after recent fires are addressed; the code officer said dead or dying landscaping often constitutes a fire hazard and multiple code sections can be used when enforced. Staff agreed to research any commissioner questions about commissioners participating in volunteer programs.
