Mount Diablo Unified board approves resolutions, personnel appointments and facility contracts; suspends enforcement of one expulsion

The Mount Diablo Unified School District Board of Education on March 25 approved a slate of routine and operational items, including three ceremonial resolutions, two certificated personnel appointments, site‑work contracts and an expulsion with conditions.

Resolutions and adult education: The board approved Resolution 25/26‑57 recognizing April as Arab American Heritage Month and Resolution 25/26‑59 recognizing April as National Cannabis Awareness Month (the latter emphasizing prevention and education about adolescent cannabis use). The board also approved Resolution 25/26‑58 in support of California Adult Education Week; Elaine Alvite, director of adult education, said the district’s adult school served 6,733 students in 2024–25 and described new pilot programs, including custodial training and targeted math support for students transitioning to Diablo Valley College. “We are building on that strong foundation… and expanding our programs to meet community needs,” Alvite said.

Personnel approvals: The board approved the appointment of Christina Filios as Executive Director, Curriculum Instruction and Improvement, and Megan Gertz as Assistant Director, Instructional Support. Both appointees gave brief remarks thanking the board and describing their commitments to instructional improvement.

Facilities and contracts: Trustees approved an independent contractor agreement for visual and mechanical inspection and assessment of the district’s solar sites with SunUp Solar Tech Services. District staff said assessments could begin over spring break with the goal of completing work within the current fiscal year (April–June) and that the assessments will inform a districtwide maintenance procurement. The board also approved a contract award to Roto‑Rooter for a sewer line repair at Mount Diablo Elementary; the contractor is responsible for waste removal and will follow OSHA and public contract safety requirements.

Labor and policy items: The board accepted additional sunshine proposals from Teamsters Local 856 related to ongoing negotiations and approved revisions to Policy 4040 (Employee Use of Technology) as presented.

Student discipline action: In closed‑session follow‑up the board moved to expel student 11‑26 with detailed conditions for readmission (no campus entry, no attendance at MDUSD‑sponsored activities, coursework to be completed at a new site, completion of 20 hours of counseling focused on anger management and conflict resolution, minimum 2.0 GPA, 90% attendance, and no future expellable offenses). The motion also included suspension of enforcement of the expulsion while placement is determined; the board recorded the action as approved 5‑0 with student trustee support.

Votes and procedure: Multiple items passed unanimously (typically recorded as 5‑0 with the student trustee noted as supportive). Trustees who moved or seconded motions were named in the record for key items (for example, the minutes and agenda approvals and several motions carried with identified movers and seconders). What’s next: Several community requests (notably parents asking for a focused agenda item on the Bancroft program) remain pending; district staff said solar assessments would inform a future maintenance procurement and that placement decisions related to the expelled student will be determined by Student Services.
