District reports gains on state tests; staff previews English‑learner master plan

Director Kate Sprague said the district’s CAASPP results showed overall gains from the prior year: 83% met or exceeded standards in English language arts, 79% in math and 75% in science. Sprague cautioned that subgroup numbers are small and year‑to‑year fluctuations can be large. She said the district will provide comparison data when the state releases certified dashboards in mid‑November.
Trustees asked about persistent gaps for Hispanic/Latino students and why math and science scores lag ELA. Sprague and trustees discussed adopting a coherent math curriculum across TK–8 to improve transition to middle school and using I‑Ready and DIBELS for item analysis and targeted interventions. Staff noted a plan to bring additional data and an updated EL master plan to the board in January or February for action later in the year.
The EL overview covered federal and state law (Every Student Succeeds Act, California Education Code), the initial and summative ELPAC assessments, reclassification criteria (including overall level 4 and teacher verification) and monitoring requirements for reclassified students for four years.
