Lawndale organizers outlined plans for a district-wide back-to-school festival and several volunteer-driven resource efforts intended to support families before the school year.
S6 said the LESD Back to School Festival is tentatively scheduled for Aug. 15 and will include three parts: student resources (donation-driven backpacks, shoes, hygiene supplies and on-site immunizations provided by partners such as Providence), parent and caregiver tech support (help with ParentSquare and PowerSchool, RAP team assistance and sign-ups), and family festival activities (music, face painting, partner tables). "My goal is to try to get to at least 1000 for everybody," S6 said of backpacks; S6 added that 600 backpacks and about 300 shoes have been collected so far with partner groups (Soles for Soles) and asked PTAs and community partners to staff tables and donate.
Organizers also described ongoing food and produce distributions (Smith, Twain, Green, Adams) and the Lawndale Youth Parade on Saturday, April 25, for which volunteers will staff distribution tables. S6 asked attendees to sign up and to spread the word to school-site PTAs and parent groups.
Volunteer onboarding was explained: fingerprinting and a background check (referred to as "TV" confirmation in the transcript) are available at the district so community members can start volunteering once cleared. Organizers offered additional volunteer opportunities including sorting donated items in storage on Anderson campus.
Ending: Organizers will send emails with more information and volunteer sign-ups; attendees were asked to help publicize dates and to consider hosting tables or volunteer shifts.
