Summary
Commission member Matthew summarized a NAPC webinar on historic trades and commissioners agreed to pursue quarterly special meetings, park local‑listing recommendations and social media outreach; tentative dates set for an April special meeting and two Jane’s Walks in May.
Commission member Matthew reported back on a National Alliance (NAPC) webinar about historic trades and workforce development, and staff and commissioners discussed follow‑up outreach and scheduling.
Matthew summarized webinar takeaways including community restoration models, the role of federal tax credits and the need to support workforce development for historic trades. “Support workforce development for trades… partner with trade schools,” he said, noting examples such as trade academies in San Antonio and a metalworking program in Lewiston and pointing commissioners to resources such as preservelist.org.
Staff (Anya Colette) said she shared materials from the webinar with the city’s economic development office and that the economic development officer planned to raise the issue with the regional workforce board. Commissioners discussed quarterly special meeting options; consensus was to pursue April 16 at 7 p.m. as a possible date for a special meeting to workshop process items and survey recommendations.
Staff also briefed the commission on outreach: social media micro‑posts for Preservation Month (May), two Jane’s Walks planned for early May (one on waterfront/maritime history and one downtown), and a possible local listing process for Chapin, Broadway and Davenport parks that would go first to the business and economic development committee and then to council for formal approval. Staff said draft ordinance adjustments (including a demolition‑section clarification) await state input and will return to the April packet.
No formal votes were taken on these items; staff will follow up on scheduling, outreach drafts and the local‑listing recommendation process.
