The Wisconsin Rapids Planning Commission on April 6 approved a conditional use permit for the Department of Natural Resources to construct a storage building at 473 Griffith Avenue.
Elizabeth Edwardson, associate planner, told commissioners the building is "over 12,000 square feet" and will be used for equipment and vehicle storage on an almost 18-acre parcel rezoned to the Institutional I-1 district. She said staff found the proposal compatible with existing on-site uses, with minimal traffic and environmental effects expected beyond some tree removal and additional impervious surface that will be mitigated through stormwater and landscaping measures. Staff recommended approval with conditions including a detailed landscaping plan and updated architectural renderings for the south-facing elevation.
The chair opened a public hearing and, after hearing no speakers, commissioners voted 7–0 to approve the permit with the staff conditions. The approval requires the applicant to submit the landscaping plan and architectural updates for review and permits as outlined by staff.
The commission’s action is limited to the conditional use permit; any building permits, stormwater approvals or minor plan modifications must still be approved by the Community Development Department before construction begins.
