Summary
Director of fine arts Dwight Emmert and student Jocelyn Rogers described a renewed two‑week intensive summer musical program and added weekend camps that add roughly 40 instructional hours; students said the structure helps them bring skills back to their home schools.
At the April 6 Evansville Vanderburgh School Corp board meeting, the district highlighted its Summer Musical Company and a renewed two‑week intensive model intended to deepen students’ musical theatre experience.
Dwight Emmert, introduced by district staff as the director of fine arts, said the program centers students in performance roles while adults provide scenery, lighting, costuming and sound support. He described the two‑week intensive as a ‘‘summer stock’’ format and said weekend immersive camps add roughly 40 additional hours of rehearsal and instruction. "Students will be changed forever," Emmert told the board, emphasizing the program’s focus on student ownership and skill development.
Jocelyn Rogers, a junior at North High School, described the schedule and preparation: weekend rehearsals plus an intensive two‑week run help students learn foundational skills they then take back to their home schools. Emmert said high‑school enrollment for the musical is up, though orchestra slots are smaller this year due to orchestral size limits.
The board responded with encouragement and best wishes for the cast and staff. The presentation was part of the meeting’s district spotlight and did not include a board vote.
