Parent urges Leitchfield council to rethink accessible playground design; local pool owner backs call for more review

Kara Atwood, who identified herself as a parent of an adult with special needs, told the Leitchfield City Council she supports the proposed playground project but fears the current tower element is not truly accessible for children who use wheelchairs, walkers, gait trainers or canes. "Can those children truly use that tower? Can they access it with dignity and independence?" she asked, urging officials to consult families with lived experience and accessibility experts before finalizing the design.

Atwood said the tower appears to have limited visibility from outside the structure, which could make supervision and rescue difficult if a child were to get hurt or stuck. She called for ramps, features that allow wheelchair users to reach higher play areas and design choices that prioritize both inclusion and safety.

John Allen of Infinity Pools spoke in support of the project but said he wanted more "leg work" after reviewing the plans. He expressed concerns about enclosed spaces and potential misuse, and asked the council to ensure the design accommodates everyone. The mayor and council members responded that the project has included many accessible elements beyond the tower and that considerable design work has been completed.

Council members did not take immediate action on the playground design at this meeting. The comments were entered during the public-comment period and will be available for project staff and council to consider as the plans are refined.
