Finance committee forwards Tim Hamlin nomination for city register to full council

The Providence City Council Committee on Finance on April 7 voted to forward Mayor-sent paperwork appointing Tim Hamlin as city register to the full City Council for a final vote.

Hamlin, who joined the committee to summarize his resume, said he has spent “most of my life” in management roles, including 19 years with the Providence Downtown Improvement District and eight years as an operations manager. He told the committee he had overseen an approximately $1,100,000 budget and had responsibility for training, hiring and project planning.

Committee members asked whether Hamlin would leave his current post as deputy director at MCCS or take on the city-registrar duties in addition. Hamlin said the registrar role would be “an additional role on top of it” and noted that his office is adjacent to the registrar's office, which he said made concurrent duties feasible. Chairwoman Joanne Ryan said the appointment was part of an organizational reallocation and that Hamlin had the support of administration to cover both roles.

The nomination was read into the record as a mayoral communication citing the permanent home‑rule charter. After a brief question-and-answer period about backfill and capacity, the committee voted to move the appointment to the full council; the chair said the full‑council vote is expected on April 16.
