Summary
The Fort Myers Beach Council unanimously approved an FDEP grant of $292,500 for downtown stormwater mitigation phase 1, a walk-on special-event permit for Glow by the Gulf on April 17–18, and confirmed Ed Schoonover for the Local Planning Agency; council also approved consent‑agenda emergency extensions for three tropical storms.
At its April 6 meeting the Fort Myers Beach Town Council approved several administrative items and routine actions by unanimous vote.
Grant approval: The council authorized the town manager to accept and administer a Florida Department of Environmental Protection grant totaling $292,500 for downtown stormwater mitigation Phase 1. Staff said the town has budgeted matching funds and identified priority downtown locations (including Crescent and 3rd Street) that experience frequent tidal or stormwater flooding. "This is just another pot of money that we can use," a staff member said, noting design and coordination work will follow.
Special event permit: Council approved a walk‑on special event permit for Glow by the Gulf at Santini Plaza on April 17–18 (6 a.m.–8 p.m.). Staff reported public‑safety and fire reviews were complete; event lead Dawn described more than 24 vendors, wellness programming and plans for yoga and fitness classes. Council suggested staff consider a recurring permit option for future annual events.
Appointment and consent items: Earlier in the meeting the council appointed Ed Schoonover to the Local Planning Agency to fill an open seat and approved a consent agenda that extended several local emergency declarations tied to tropical storms. All motions were carried unanimously.
