Board adopts final EIR for Inglewood High reconstruction; public urges better facilities upkeep and immigrant protections

The Inglewood Unified School District board held a public hearing on Feb. 18 and approved the final environmental impact report (EIR) for the Inglewood High School reconstruction project.
Staff explained that the scope of the reconstruction triggered a full CEQA review. "Because of the sheer magnitude of the scope...we were required to conduct a full EIR," said Mr. Miles, the staff presenter, describing the final EIR and the 45-day public-comment period that ended Feb. 3. He said the district received comments from three agencies that were addressed in the final document (State Clearinghouse No. 2025070682).
Public commenters used the hearing to raise other facilities and district concerns. John Hughes asked the board to apply the same attention to smaller facilities and ongoing maintenance issues as the district applies to large projects, citing HVAC problems, a recent Williams complaint at City Honors, and an incident at Woodworth Monroe where a staff member was briefly locked in a restroom. "We need to apply that same intensity and dedication to the daily things," Hughes said.
During public comment, several speakers also raised immigration-enforcement concerns. Student Jesse Ramirez urged the district to plan for ICE activity near campuses and proposed staff training, perimeter patrols at dismissal and temporary changes to phone policies so students could track enforcement activity. "ICE has been targeting youth throughout the country...we must plan for how students can be protective while leaving campus too," Ramirez said. Resident Yaritza Gonzalez described local ICE activity and urged the board to implement Policy 1445 and to create legal and safety-net resources for immigrant families.
Following the hearing, the board approved Resolution 20-2025-2026 adopting the final EIR (item 8c). After the vote the presiding officer closed the public-hearing segment and the meeting proceeded with consent and other items.
Next steps: With the EIR adopted and the resolution approved, staff may file the notice of determination and advance project activities; board and staff said they will continue to engage with community requests about facilities maintenance and immigration-policy implementation.
