Students told Chico Unified leaders they want movement, supervision and more responsiveness from teachers

District directors Heather Cifuentes (elementary) and Pedro Caldera (secondary) presented highlights from recent student Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) meetings on Oct. 15, summarizing student feedback gathered from multiple sites.
Elementary students praised engaging instruction and counselor check‑ins; they recommended more movement and flexible seating in class, and reinforced consistent expectations for respectful behavior. Students also suggested more supervision at recess and emphasized the value of wellness centers.
At the secondary level, students reported that teachers use engaging strategies (whiteboards, group work) and said they appreciate brain breaks. Students asked for quicker teacher responses to emails and suggested adding or requiring personal‑finance coursework; staff noted a personal‑finance class is offered at Pleasant Valley and will be required next year.
Directors said student comments are being shared with site administrators and that the district will continue to refine supports (wellness ambassadors, counseling lessons and campus supervision funded in part by LCSSP grant efforts). Board members discussed scheduling and sustainable teacher availability for consultation during the workday, including past local trials of advisory or consultation periods.
No action was required; staff treated the item as informational and said more in‑depth analysis will be provided to the board in the coming months.
