Roxbury board honors longtime president Leo Coakley at final meeting

The Roxbury Township Board of Education opened its regular meeting by honoring board president Leo Coakley as he concluded his final term.

Charlene Peterson of the New Jersey School Boards Association praised Coakley's approach to governance, noting his commitment to training and teamwork. "He carries out this role with grace, professionalism and kindness," Peterson said, and told the board that Coakley had earned the association's highest credential and logged roughly 120 credits of training.

Board members and former district leaders echoed those remarks. A fellow board member recalled recruiting Coakley to run and described him as a steady negotiator in contract talks. Former Superintendent Loretta Bridal said Coakley "is always willing to listen to every side" and called his work "a blessing to Roxbury." "He was one of my board presidents," Bridal said, adding that Coakley always kept students at the center of discussions.

Coakley, who presided over the meeting, thanked colleagues and reflected on collaborative moments, including the superintendent search that resulted in the current superintendent. He said the board's work was most meaningful when members listened to one another and to the public.

The board presented Coakley with remarks and tokens of appreciation; multiple members stood to give personal tributes that emphasized his mentorship, neutrality and longstanding involvement in district governance. The session then moved to routine business and committee reports.

What's next: The board will complete its remaining agenda items and conduct an orientation for newly elected members ahead of leadership selections at the next organizational meeting.
