Gardiner proclaims Dec. 6 as Mark Duchette Day and declares December Small Business Month

Mayor Patricia Hart presented a pair of ceremonial proclamations Dec. 3 recognizing community service and small businesses.
Hart read a proclamation honoring Mark Duchette of Turner for 11 years with the U.S. Postal Service and nine years on his current Gardiner route, noting the mayor’s office cited that he walks roughly 14 miles a day delivering mail and will retire at the end of the month. The council moved and unanimously adopted the proclamation designating Saturday, Dec. 6, 2025, as Mark Duchette Day. “It’s been a great experience here,” Duchette told the council, thanking colleagues and saying he looks forward to attending community events after retirement.
Hart also read a proclamation designating December 2025 as Small Business Month in Gardiner at the request of the city council and the local Main Street promotions committee. The proclamation quoted statistics attributed to the United States Small Business Administration that small businesses represent 99.7% of firms with paid employees and employ 46.8% of private‑sector employees. Councilors moved and unanimously adopted the small‑business proclamation and thanked Main Street organizers for local events, including the tree lighting.
Both proclamations were adopted by unanimous voice vote; the council asked the economic development director to issue a press release to amplify the Small Business Month designation.
