Belmont, N.C. — The Belmont City Council unanimously approved a plan April 6 to install a Sports Hall of Fame honor wall inside the recreation building and authorized city staff to install the track system that will hold framed plaques and portraits.
Art Shoemaker of the Belmont Sports Hall of Fame approached staff about installing rows of portraits on an 18‑foot wall off the elevator. Staff described a proposed sliding track system designed by local craftsman Jeff Gibson; Gibson will supply the tracks and asked city staff to handle the final attachment and installation.
Miles said public-works staff reviewed the prototype and believed city crew could install the track system if the city provided materials and hardware. “The track system itself will be constructed by Jeff Gibson,” Miles said, and staff can mount the tracks so the plaques slide into place and are capped to prevent removal.
Council discussion noted the uniform appearance of the inductee portraits and that the location would allow future growth of the display. A motion to approve the use of the wall and to authorize city staff to install the tracks passed on a voice vote; council members thanked Shoemaker and Gibson for donating materials and design work.
Next steps: staff will coordinate with the Sports Hall of Fame volunteers to schedule installation and notify the rec center stakeholders about the planned signage and display placement.
