Cusseta–Chattahoochee work session prioritizes Friendship Road repairs, plans CUP review and schedules P&Z reappointments

The Unified Government of Cusseta–Chattahoochee County held a work session on Jan. 27, 2025. Chairman Charles Coffey opened the session at 9:00 a.m. and Robert Sumner offered public comment saying he runs training at the nearby NSA compound and offered to organize free charity events and support county activities.
Department heads gave brief updates: Parks and recreation reported ongoing basketball and upcoming baseball seasons and staffing needs; code enforcement and permits staff summarized recent permits and a planned spring festival partnership; utilities and public-works reported a repaired well control box, heater replacements, hydrant work and two new labor hires; animal-control noted an increase in stray dogs; public-works reported minor road repairs, promotions to mechanic and foreman and progress on fiber locates.
County Manager Thomas Weaver reviewed items for future regular-meeting agendas and work sessions. The board agreed to add cemetery bylaws to a future work session after the county attorney coordinates with a cemetery committee and drafts proposed ordinance language. Commissioners asked staff to continue reviewing the conditional-use permit (CUP) process and invited the Planning & Zoning Board to an evening session on Feb. 24 to discuss verbiage and procedural tweaks; public hearings will be scheduled as needed.
Weaver proposed using 2024 LMIG funds to repair Friendship Road; commissioners agreed to prioritize Friendship Road repairs and discussed Liberty Hill Road as a nearby candidate for future work. The manager also noted creation of a 2025 SPLOST bank account and placed reappointments of Randy Register, Teresa Smith and Willie Brown to Planning & Zoning, plus a Public Safety Director recruitment, on the Feb. 4 regular-meeting agenda.
Weaver briefed the commission on House Bill 581 and said the county will likely hold a special election in November on a sales-tax measure tied to HB581; staff will prepare informational flyers for public distribution. The work session entered executive session at 10:12 a.m. to discuss legal, personnel and real-estate matters and reconvened at 10:55 a.m.; Chairman Coffey said the closed-session topics fell within open-meetings-law exceptions.
The work session adjourned at 10:58 a.m.
